RSG-THPS4

Published 2003

Using unmodified versions of the PlayStation game "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4," this piece exploits bugs and glitches in the code to create dirty, jolting game loops. Video games are both the medium and the content of the work; no additional footage or editing is used. After being "prepared," the game plays itself perpetually.

Subject: Art
Wow this was supposed to be art?

And on the other hand, you cant get much more trite than mentioning 'piss christ' while begging art to move backwards 500 years.

i'm giving this worthless video a 5 just because the one reviewer couldnt bring themselves to mention one artist classified as abstract or modern in any way in their examples of good art. What do you sit around in the mall watching guys doing portraits doing a slow clap while a solitary tear rolls down your cheek?
"Bravo sir...bravo"

I wish I would have used my time watching this on something else. Like watching Jello harden.

obviously a microcosm of life itself. The character is trapped in a little corner, and keeps on moving forward, but continually hurts himself. He keeps on going, though. The fact that he never stops shows how ridiculous our own lives are. When I noticed at the end that his score was still "0", I cried.

Subject: Another example of meaningless rubbish...
Uninteresting, repetitive, irrelevant, meaningless, and devoid of all purpose, this horrendous film may be heralded as "groundbreaking" and "innovative" by those who have lost all sight of art, but it is still an utter waste of time and filespace.

My good friend, this embrace of the absurd---a product of an anti-intellectual and demotic age that rejects all meaning---will pass. Surely some day some stray artists will turn away from "groundbreaking" works such as Mapplethorpe's homoerotica, Serrano's "Piss Christ" (a photo of a crucifix submerged in urine), metal blobs, and vials of semen hanging from trees. In a single exercise of courage, they will see the brilliance of Michelangelo and Rembrandt and not only realize that art has been profaned into supreme degradation, but they will do something about it.

I beseech you, be patient and do not lose your sight of things. The Rembrandts are still there, as are the Monets, and the da Vincis and the sculptures from distant antiquity; there remains much to appreciate, and much to value as meaningful and true. Simply keep faith.

Subject: Bug testing as an art
I'm assuming this is poking fun at conceptual art. Anyway, this piece of work is endured by countless masses of kids beta testing such games before they go to market. It's kinda like arranging the paddles in pong to volley forever more w/out need for future interaction. Alas, there really is nothing that can't be considered art anymore, and that in itself is art.
